Veterinarian and behaviorist Ian Dunbar shares his story about his rescue dog, Claude. When he met Claude, the dog had all sorts of problems. He was frightened, was a biter, and had bitten him four times before Ian brought him home.
Because of Claude’s issues, it was very important to Ian not to use any kind of corrections with him, because he wanted to build trust.
Walking Claude on a buckle collar was difficult, because the dog would keep steady pressure on the leash, and when he would smell something, he would bolt and Ian could not hold him.
Working with his wife and fellow dog trainer, Kelly Gorman, Ian fitted Claude with a Gentle Leader, and feels that walking Claude is no longer a pain, but is enjoyable for both of them. When he walks Claude now, he uses the Gentle Leader.
Although Ian is a dog professional, he also sees himself as a very busy dog owner with little time to train. With Claude, he has made the decision just to walk him on the Gentle Leader rather than go through the lengthy process of training him. He knows he could take the time to train Claude to walk without it, but finds it easier to just use the Gentle Leader.
